Cancun Airport Transportation: How to Get to Your Hotel

You just landed at Cancun International (CUN) and now you need to get to your hotel -- 20 to 90 minutes away depending on where you are staying. The airport has a hundred ways to overcharge you and a small number of legitimately good options. This guide walks through every one of them, what they actually cost, and which to pick based on your situation.

The 5 Options at a Glance

OptionCostTravel TimeBest For
ADO Bus$7-12 USD per person30-90 minSolo/budget, hotel zone or downtown
Authorized Taxi$40-80 USD per cab25-50 minMid-range, 1-3 people
Shared Shuttle$15-25 USD per person45-90 min (multiple stops)Budget-conscious couples
Private Transfer$40-150 USD per vehicle25-50 min directFamilies, late arrivals, comfort
Uber/DiDi$20-40 USD per ride25-50 minTech-savvy, off-airport pickup

The right answer depends on three things: how many people are with you, how much luggage you have, and what time you arrive. Specific recommendations at the end.

Option 1: ADO Bus -- The Cheapest Way (and It Is Actually Good)

ADO is Mexico's main long-distance bus company, and they run direct routes from Cancun airport to:

  • Cancun Hotel Zone (specific stops near major hotels)
  • Downtown Cancun (ADO bus terminal, then taxi to your hotel)
  • Playa del Carmen (1.5-hour direct service)
  • Tulum (2.5 hours)
  • Merida, Valladolid, and other inland cities

Pricing: $7-12 USD per person depending on destination. Buy at the ADO counter inside the terminal (every terminal has one) or via the ADO mobile app.

The reality: The buses are clean, air-conditioned, and reliable. They run on a fixed schedule (every 30-60 minutes during the day). The downside is that they only stop at specific points -- if your hotel is not on the route, you will need a short taxi from the closest stop.

When to take it: Solo traveler, traveling light, going to a known stop in Cancun or directly to Playa del Carmen / Tulum. Saves you up to 80% versus a taxi.

Option 2: Authorized Airport Taxi

Inside the terminal you will find official taxi counters with zone-based fixed pricing posted on the wall. This is the only safe taxi option from the airport. Do not let anyone "help" you with luggage and walk you to a vehicle outside -- those are not authorized.

Pricing (approximate, in USD, per cab not per person):

  • Hotel Zone: $50-65 USD
  • Downtown Cancun: $40-50 USD
  • Playa del Carmen: $90-110 USD
  • Tulum: $150-180 USD

Pay at the counter, not the driver. You receive a paper voucher to hand to the driver assigned to you outside.

When to take it: 1-3 people with normal luggage, mid-range budget, want a direct trip without intermediate stops.

Option 3: Shared Shuttle (Colectivo)

Several companies offer shared van service from the airport to the hotel zone and Riviera Maya. You book online beforehand or at a counter at the airport, and you share the van with other arrivals going to the same area.

Pricing: $15-25 USD per person.

The trade-off: Significantly cheaper than a private taxi, but slower because the van makes multiple hotel drop-offs in sequence. If you are the last drop, expect 60-90 minutes from airport to hotel.

When to take it: Couples on a budget, no rush, comfortable with a longer ride.

Option 4: Private Transfer

A pre-booked private vehicle (van or sprinter) picks you up at the terminal and takes you directly to your hotel. The driver waits in arrivals with a sign showing your name.

Pricing depends on destination and vehicle (van for up to 10 passengers, sprinter for up to 16):

  • Cancun Hotel Zone: $40-70 USD per vehicle
  • Playa del Carmen: $65-100 USD per vehicle
  • Tulum: $100-150 USD per vehicle

USD prices are approximate based on the current MXN exchange rate. Final quote is calculated at the day-of-service rate.

The advantage: Direct, comfortable, no waiting, no shared stops, fixed price agreed in advance. For families with luggage or late-night arrivals, this is by far the lowest-stress option.

When to take it: 4+ people, multiple suitcases, late or early flight, traveling with kids or older relatives, going to Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

Option 5: Uber and DiDi -- The Asterisk

Both Uber and DiDi operate in Cancun. Pricing is competitive (often cheaper than the airport taxi). However:

Airport pickups have historically been contested. Local taxi unions have actively blocked rideshare pickups at CUN terminals, sometimes aggressively. The legal situation has shifted multiple times, and depending on the week and the driver, your Uber may or may not be willing to pick you up at the terminal directly.

Practical approach: If you want to use Uber, the safest path is to walk a short distance away from the terminal and request the ride from there. This avoids the union blockades.

Recommendation: Do not rely on Uber as your only plan. Have a backup -- ADO bus, authorized taxi, or pre-booked private transfer. If your Uber works, great. If not, you have an alternative.

For trips back TO the airport from your hotel, Uber works without the same friction. It is mostly the inbound airport pickup that is contested.

Common Scams to Avoid

The airport has a small ecosystem of people who are not your friend. Specifically:

  1. "Helpful" porters who walk you outside: Anyone in the terminal trying to take your luggage and lead you to a vehicle is not authorized airport staff. Walk to the official taxi counter or ADO counter yourself.
  2. Time-share salespeople disguised as transportation reps: Booths positioned to look like taxi or shuttle services that are actually time-share presentations. The giveaway: they offer a "free ride" or a "free hotel upgrade" in exchange for attending a 90-minute presentation. Skip them entirely.
  3. Drivers asking for additional fees mid-trip: A legitimate authorized taxi or pre-booked transfer has the price agreed before you get in. If a driver tries to add fees during the trip ("highway toll," "luggage fee"), you are in an unauthorized vehicle.
  4. Currency confusion at the taxi counter: Always confirm whether the quoted price is USD or MXN. Some scammy operators quote a low number in pesos that they then charge in dollars.

Our Recommendation by Traveler Type

  • Solo backpacker, light luggage, daytime arrival: ADO bus to your zone, then short taxi to hotel.
  • Couple, mid-range, daytime arrival: Authorized taxi from the airport counter.
  • Family with kids, multiple suitcases, any arrival time: Private pre-booked transfer. The cost difference vs a taxi is small, the comfort difference is huge.
  • Solo or couple arriving after midnight: Private pre-booked transfer. Late nights are when the airport feels least friendly.
  • Group of 5+ traveling together: Private sprinter transfer is cheaper per person than multiple taxis.
  • Going to Playa del Carmen or Tulum: ADO bus is excellent and direct. Private transfer is the next best option for groups or heavy luggage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take from CUN airport to the Hotel Zone? 25-50 minutes by direct vehicle, longer for the ADO bus or shared shuttle due to scheduled stops.

Should I tip the driver? Yes -- 50-100 MXN ($3-6 USD) per bag for a private transfer or taxi is standard. ADO bus drivers are not tipped.

Can I pay in USD or only in pesos? USD is widely accepted at the airport counters. Drivers prefer pesos but most accept USD. Bring small bills -- nobody wants to break a $100.

Do I need to book transportation in advance? For ADO and authorized taxis, no -- they are always available at the terminal. For private transfers, yes -- they require your flight details to meet you at arrivals.

Is it safe to take public transportation from the airport? The ADO bus is completely safe and used by both locals and tourists. Public city buses do not service the airport directly.
