Best Time to Visit Cancun: Month-by-Month Guide for 2026

The honest answer to "when should I visit Cancun?" is that there is no bad time -- but there is a best time for you specifically, depending on what you want from your trip. Weather, prices, crowds, and seasonal experiences vary dramatically between months, and knowing what to expect means the difference between a good vacation and a perfect one. Here is what we have learned from years of operating tours in every season.

The Two Seasons at a Glance

Dry Season (November - April): Perfect weather, higher prices, more tourists. This is peak season for a reason -- sunny skies, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures. Hotels and tours are at their most expensive, and popular spots are at their most crowded.

Wet Season (May - October): Afternoon showers, lower prices, fewer tourists. The rain is typically a 30-60 minute burst in the late afternoon, not all-day downpours. Mornings are almost always sunny. Hotel rates drop 30-50%, and you get shorter lines everywhere. Sargassum seaweed is worst during these months on some beaches.

Month-by-Month Guide

December - February: Peak Season

Weather: 24-28°C (75-82°F), very low humidity, occasional cool fronts (nortes) can drop temperatures briefly. Ocean temperature around 26°C (79°F).

Crowds: Maximum. Christmas through New Year is the most expensive week of the year. January and February are slightly calmer but still high season.

Prices: Highest of the year. Book hotels 3-4 months in advance for December.

Best activities: Everything is available. Perfect weather for ruins tours like Chichen Itza ($89 USD) where shade is limited. The Sunset Cruise ($76 USD) is spectacular during these months with clearer skies.

Our take: If you want guaranteed perfect weather and do not mind paying premium prices, this is your window. February is the sweet spot -- peak season weather with slightly fewer crowds than December-January.

March - April: Spring Break and Easter

Weather: 26-31°C (79-88°F), warming up, humidity increasing. Still mostly dry.

Crowds: Very high in March (American spring break). Easter week (Semana Santa) brings Mexican domestic tourism and is extremely busy. April after Easter calms down significantly.

Prices: High in March, peak during Easter, moderate in late April.

Best activities: The spring equinox at Chichen Itza (March 21) draws thousands to see the serpent shadow descend the pyramid -- a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Xcaret ($139 USD) is fantastic in this weather. Cenotes are perfect year-round but especially refreshing as temperatures climb.

Our take: Avoid mid-March if you want a relaxed trip (spring break crowds are intense). Late April is an underrated gem -- near-peak weather, significantly lower prices.

May - June: Shoulder Season (Our Favorite)

Weather: 28-33°C (82-91°F), humidity rising, afternoon showers begin. Mornings are sunny and hot.

Crowds: Dropping significantly. This is when Cancun starts to feel less touristy.

Prices: 30-40% lower than peak season. This is where smart travelers save serious money.

Best activities: Whale shark season opens June 1 -- our Whale Shark Tour ($160 USD) is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the planet. Sea turtle nesting begins on the beaches. The Cenotes Adventure ($69 USD) is a perfect escape from the afternoon heat -- cenote water stays a cool 24°C year-round.

Our take: May-June is our favorite recommendation for value-conscious travelers. You get 90% of peak-season quality at 60% of the price. The rain is brief and predictable -- plan outdoor activities for the morning and you are fine.

July - August: Wet Season Peak

Weather: 29-34°C (84-93°F), hottest months, daily afternoon rain (usually 30-60 minutes). High humidity.

Prices: Low season rates. Great hotel deals. Tour prices stay the same year-round.

Crowds: Moderate. American and European summer vacations bring families, but it is nothing like December or March.

Best activities: Whale shark season at its absolute peak. This is the best time for our Whale Shark Tour -- largest concentrations of sharks, 95%+ sighting success rate. Holbox Island ($139 USD) combines whale sharks with bioluminescent plankton. Sargassum is at its worst on some Caribbean beaches, but cenotes, islands, and parks are unaffected.

Our take: If whale sharks are your priority, July is the month. Accept the afternoon rain (it actually cools things down and is often welcome), pack biodegradable sunscreen, and enjoy the lower prices.

September - October: Best Value Window

Weather: 27-32°C (81-90°F), still rainy, officially hurricane season (peak September). Hurricane direct hits on Cancun are rare -- roughly once every 10-15 years -- but the risk is real.

Prices: Absolute lowest of the year. Some hotels are 50-60% off peak rates. This is the deepest discount period.

Crowds: Minimal. Many days the beaches and tours feel semi-private.

Best activities: Whale shark season ends mid-September. The autumn equinox at Chichen Itza (September 21) is far less crowded than the March event but equally spectacular. Xel-Ha ($119 USD) and water-based activities are great because the rain does not affect the experience.

Our take: September-October is the calculated gamble. You get the best prices of the year and the emptiest Cancun you will ever see, but you accept a small hurricane risk. Many experienced Cancun travelers swear by October -- it is their secret month.

November: The Perfect Balance

Weather: 25-30°C (77-86°F), rain tapering off, humidity dropping. The transition into dry season.

Prices: Still shoulder-season rates, though they start climbing toward Thanksgiving (US holiday).

Crowds: Low to moderate. Thanksgiving week is busy with American travelers, but the rest of November is calm.

Best activities: Everything. Weather is warm without being oppressive, and the wet season is ending. Sea turtle hatchlings make their way to the ocean (May-October nesting, hatching through November). All tours are operating with good conditions.

Our take: If we could only recommend one month, it would be November. Near-perfect weather, shoulder-season prices, minimal crowds, and the transition out of hurricane season. First two weeks of November are the sweet spot.
